My mother is Irish and from an early age she told me history as an exciting series of stories — with dates. Those who wielded influence at court took whatever lands and positions they could, and there was a general breakdown of law and order in England.

Book 1 Author oggulden As the storm clouds gather, Igguledn Henry and his queen are besieged abroad and at home. With a secret deal struck for Henry to marry a young French noblewoman, Margaret of Anjou, those fears become all too real. In fact, you’ll be hard-pressed to find tropes for these characters, to put them in boxes.
But he is outnumbered and at last has to flee. I have enormous respect for those who still labour at the chalk-face. Finally, it is about the five great families descended from King Edward III and how they fought and maneuvered to control the throne of England.
The Igguoden loses not only Maine and Anjou, but also Cinn. He had long lived in his lands in France, and didn’t like to get evicted. An archer in his past, he remains on good terms with Thomas Woodchurch, an ex-archer himself, Royally screwed by the truce, which results in handing back lands won in France by Henry V.

All in all a very promising start and indicative of what could quite well be the historical fiction book of the year. York’s leadership in France strombird taken away and given to William de la Pole, who tries in vain to defend the French land.

Case in point being Jack Cade. Then iggukden, I absolutely love anything about the War of the Roses and this book went further back for me than most of the others I have read. His desire for peace at any cost is presented as playing into the French hands and directly leading to the loss of Normandy. Certainly you realise the difficulties writing about these period pieces when reading the epilogue and I can accept that.
