Amazon Second Chance Pass it on, trade it in, give it a second life. But it could also be shelved with Proust’s Swann’s Way for the sensual cling of memory and Chekhov’s Lady with the Lapdog for its sadness.


This is a Winterson, through and through, every word weighing heavily, every emotion raw. The only reason I gave it two stars is because Winterson obviously has talent — there were a few places where the imagery was striking enough to pierce my annoyance — and clearly this is a matter of taste and preference. It is everything to do with extraordinary passion and unrequited love at its worst.

The King of Capri and Tanglewreck are children’s stories. To lose someone you love is to alter your life for ever. But I still hate him for that. More contemporary than Graham Greene’s The End of the Affair this narrative questions the responsibility of lovers to one another.

It’s more an appreciation, but there’s an emotional distance I find to her writing, like I can’t quite get inside of it, like I’m not ready, perhaps, or it’s not meant for me.

Gah — I found this insufferably narcissistic and eye-rolling to read, devoid of any sympathetic characters save the zoo-lady Jacqueline, and incredibly unsatisfying in every way.

Books read at an impressionable age always leave you astounded. Her artistry makes my mouth drop open.

I have to admit, this wouldn’t have been a book Jeanette would have personally gone out and bought. Jul 23, Robin rated it it was amazing Shelves: It starts out as a story of an affair, but the second half is more of a memory about or a lovestory to the lover’s body.

Write a customer review. It was less like reading facts and wintersln like actually feeling them properly on and under my very own skin. I felt very sad nearing the end of the book.
